Best Anki Workflow for IELTS Reading Vocabulary

IELTS vocabulary cards usually fail for one simple reason: they capture the wrong thing.

When you get a reading question wrong, it is rarely because you didn't know a highly specific, impossible-to-guess noun. It is almost always because you missed a small connecting phrase that completely reversed the paragraph's logic.

Start from the mistake, not the word list

After finishing a practice passage, do not ask yourself, "Which words looked advanced?" Instead, ask: "Which words changed how I interpreted this passage?"

These are usually functional words:

• Qualifiers: partly, mainly, tends to, is likely to
• Contrast Signals: however, whereas, despite, conversely
• Evidence Verbs: suggest, indicate, imply, demonstrate
• Logic Nouns: assumption, pattern, outcome, constraint

They are not always glamorous. But they are exactly what makes a trap answer look plausible.

A concrete example of a bad vs. good card

Imagine a passage says: "The recent data may indicate a long-term shift in consumer behavior."

If you just make a card for the loud noun "behavior", you are capturing the wrong piece of difficulty. The real difficulty is the phrase "may indicate". It is weaker than a direct claim (like "proves"). If your card only stores the noun, you are completely missing the nuance that IELTS will test you on.

The highly efficient IELTS workflow

Stop reading general word lists and start doing this:

1. Finish the IELTS passage under strict time pressure.
2. Review wrong or uncertain questions immediately.
3. Identify if the mistake came from a topic noun (usually guessable) or a functional passage-logic word (critical).
4. Build cards only from the language that directly affected your interpretation.
5. Keep your daily new cards low. Reading practice must always stay the priority over flashcard review.
