How to Edit a Vocabulary Deck Before Sending It to Anki

The pre-Anki editing phase is the only place where you can be ruthless completely for free.

This phase matters heavily because once a flashcard officially enters your Anki review queue, your brain starts treating it with a strange psychological reverence. Even terrible cards start feeling official.

Edit in four aggressive passes

Do not blindly click "Export to Anki" immediately after reading a chapter. Let the words cool off, then filter them:

Pass 1: Complete Junk Instantly delete optical character recognition (OCR) errors, weird line breaks, duplicates, and completely empty context fields.

Pass 2: The Context Repair Fix horribly cut sentences. If the sentence fragment makes zero grammatical sense, fix it. Make sure the learning unit actually reads like a real piece of human language.

Pass 3: The Value Check Look at the target word. Ask yourself: Is this word highly transferable? Is it memorable? Will I ever need to write this word in an email or essay? If no, delete the entire card.

What a broken card looks like

If you export without editing, you will end up reviewing failure points like this:

• The Fragment: A sentence that starts in the middle of a dependent clause.
• The Dead Hook: The word is valid, but the context sentence you saved completely fails to explain why the word mattered in the story.
• The Encyclopedia: The card includes so much native dictionary text that reviewing it takes 20 seconds instead of 3.
