How to Spot Filler Words in an Auto-Generated Deck

Auto-generated flashcard decks are always bloated with highly plausible "filler words." You must learn how to ruthlessly hunt them down and delete them.

BookToAnki Editorial·September 28, 2026·filtering

If software generates your vocabulary deck, that deck absolutely contains massive amounts of filler.

The most dangerous part? Filler words almost never announce themselves. They look highly intelligent, advanced, and perfectly valid at first glance.

The anatomy of a filler word

Filler words are insidious items that perfectly satisfy the computer's extraction algorithm, but completely fail human review logic. They are almost always:

  • Highly relevant to the specific chapter, but globally completely useless in the real world.
  • Technically rare in frequency dictionaries, but utterly non-reusable in daily speech.
  • Attached to a context sentence that was broken by terrible formatting.
  • Words you already intuitively understand 90% of the time anyway.

They survive the initial export simply because they look highly plausible in a massive spreadsheet.

The Brutal 3-Second Audit

When scanning a freshly generated deck, you must play the role of a merciless editor. Ask these questions at lightning speed:

  1. Would I ever reasonably expect to meet this exact word outside of this highly specific book?
  2. Is this word doing heavy, reusable explanatory work, or is it just a local decorative adjective?
  3. If I permanently deleted this card right now, would I actually regret it next month?
Raise the Bar

Because auto-generation artificially lowers the physical cost of creating a card to zero, the deck fundamentally starts out vastly too permissive. Your editing standard cannot remain polite. It must be draconian.

If the answer to those audit questions is weak, the word is filler. Kill it instantly.

Stop hoarding. Start curating.

Why Your Vocabulary Deck Should Be Smaller

Massive flashcard decks look incredibly ambitious on a spreadsheet, but minimal, heavily opinionated decks are the only ones that actually survive reality.
