How to Think in English While Reading

Thinking in English is not a loud, theatrical inner voice. It is simply the act of staying close enough to the sentence to avoid rebuilding it.

When English learners hear the phrase "think in English," they instantly imagine something highly theatrical.

They imagine a crystal-clear, booming English voice suddenly taking over their brain. They imagine a dramatic, perfectly flipped internal switch.

Real, functional reading fluency does not work like that at all.

Fluency is just retention of contact

When you are actually reading well in English, you do not physically hear an inner monologue performing a flawless BBC broadcast.

Instead, you are simply staying close enough to the current English sentence that it does not actively demand to be rebuilt in your native language first.

That is the brutally practical, everyday reality of "thinking in English." It is not a performance. It is simply maintaining contact with the raw text.

Stop demanding perfect paraphrasability

The habit of direct thought violently breaks down for one entirely predictable reason: perfectionism.

Learners silently enforce an insane internal rule: "If I cannot flawlessly paraphrase this paragraph in my native language, I do not actually understand it."

This explicitly trains your brain to distrust direct, atmospheric understanding. You are actively commanding your brain to constantly execute an exhausting, secondary act of translation.

The Direct Contact Exercise

Pick a mildly challenging text. Read one single page with an unbreakable rule: Do not mentally paraphrase anything. When you reach the bottom of the page, forcefully ask yourself: "What basically just happened here?"

If you can accurately summarize the plot or argument without knowing the exact dictionary definition of every single verb, the paragraph already lived inside your head in English.

That partial, slightly messy contact is exactly the mental muscle you are trying to build. Stop interrupting it.

Stop hoarding. Start curating.
