What Makes a Vocabulary Card Worth Keeping
A flashcard is only worth keeping when the mathematical value of its repeated review is vastly higher than the psychological friction it adds to your morning.
The exact second a vocabulary flashcard officially enters an Anki deck, humans completely stop judging it.
We assume that because we took the time to create it, it magically deserves to exist forever. That is a massive operational mistake.
A surviving card must survive brutal interrogation
Just because a word is technically "advanced" does not mean it deserves four minutes of your attention over the next two years. A flashcard should only survive deletion if it aggressively clears several specific hurdles:
- High Frequency Horizon: Is this specific word actually highly likely to recur in the content you normally read?
- Potent Source Memory: Is your physical memory of the sentence strong enough to rapidly trigger the definition?
- Instability Status: Is the meaning of this word still genuinely unstable without the flashcard's help?
- Frictionless Review: Is the card formatted cleanly enough that reviewing it takes less than four seconds?
If a flashcard violently fails more than two of those tests, it is occupying database space out of sheer inertia rather than actual linguistic value.
Weak cards always reveal themselves behaviorally. You physically sigh when the card appears. You have zero confidence you will ever use the word in an email. You literally cannot remember why you saved it in the first place. That card is technically valid but emotionally dead. Terminate it.
Minimalism is a trust mechanism
The core point is not flashcard minimalism for the sheer aesthetic sake of minimalism.
The point is aggressively maintaining a review queue where the average card still feels entirely defensible. If you delete the garbage, your brain will subconsciously trust that the remaining deck is actually worth your time.

How to Decide Whether a Word Is Worth Saving
The hardest vocabulary decision is not how to review a word. It is noticing the moment a word only feels important because you feel guilty for not knowing it.
Best Anki Card Format for Words You Found in Books
The best vocabulary card is much smaller and uglier than you think. Stop making reference documents. Build flashcards.
Should You Add Audio to Every Vocabulary Card?
Audio looks like a flawless upgrade to your flashcards, but attaching it to every single card creates massive workflow debt with zero memory benefit.
