Why Rare Words Make Bad Flashcards

Extremely rare, archaic vocabulary words make catastrophic Anki flashcards for the exact same reason that hyper-luxury tools make terrible default purchases.

You have to calculate the expected value

Every single flashcard in your Anki deck mathematically consumes future review time.

Therefore, the most critical question is never "Is this word impressive?" The only question that matters is "Will repeatedly reviewing this specific flashcard yield a high enough future return to justify stealing my time?"

Rare, deeply literary words almost always score horribly on this calculation because:

• Recurrence is nonexistent: You might not naturally see the word again for three years.
• Transferability is zero: The word cannot be used in casual, business, or academic output without sounding insane.

The trap of the "Identity Reward"

If rare words are logically so useless, why do advanced learners hoard them in their decks?

Because obscure vocabulary creates an incredibly strong psychological identity reward. Memorizing an insanely rare, 19th-century adjective feels inherently intellectual, literary, and deeply serious. It makes the learner feel incredibly advanced, even when the underlying economic review value of the card is garbage.

Unless you are actively a literature PhD reading deeply in a highly specific historical era, adding rare words to Anki is not a badge of honor. It is a massive structural failure of your filtering system.
